About the 'The Ways in Patterns' Masterclass:

Derry Ainsworth was invited by the prestigious Hong Kong Palace Museum to conduct an engaging and educational workshop aimed at students aged 12 to 18, scheduled in July 2025. This opportunity was not only a platform for Derry to share his extensive knowledge and experience in photography but also a chance for the students to immerse themselves in the captivating world of visual storytelling. The workshop was meticulously designed to cover the essential fundamentals of photography, providing students with a solid foundation upon which they could build their skills.

Throughout the workshop, Derry introduced various techniques and strategies for capturing stunning images, particularly focusing on how to photograph the immersive exhibition that the museum was showcasing at the time. He emphasised the importance of understanding light, composition, and the unique characteristics of different photographic subjects. Additionally, he provided valuable insights into how students could enhance their smartphone photography, which has become increasingly relevant in today's digital age where mobile devices are often the primary means of capturing moments.

Following the theoretical portion of the workshop, Derry led the students on a guided tour of the exhibition. This hands-on experience was designed to put their newly acquired skills into practice. As they navigated through the museum, Derry demonstrated how to effectively use their smartphones to capture interesting and dynamic photos. He shared innovative tips on achieving unique perspectives, encouraging the students to think creatively about their angles and viewpoints. Furthermore, he provided guidance on how to frame or compose their shots, highlighting the significance of balance and focal points in photography.

In addition to shooting techniques, Derry also discussed post-processing tips, which are crucial for enhancing images after they have been taken. He introduced various editing applications that can be used on smartphones, demonstrating how even subtle adjustments can significantly improve the quality and impact of a photograph. This comprehensive approach ensured that students left the workshop not only with practical skills but also with the confidence to experiment and express their creativity through photography.

To further enrich the students' experience, Derry collaborated with Young Post editor Emily Tsang to host an exciting competition. This initiative encouraged students to submit their best photographs captured during the workshop, accompanied by a piece of writing that conveyed the story or inspiration behind their chosen image. The competition was designed to foster a sense of community and friendly rivalry among the participants, as well as to provide them with an opportunity to showcase their talents. Winners of the competition were awarded prizes from the Hong Kong Palace Museum, adding an extra layer of motivation for the students to engage deeply with the art of photography and storytelling.

This workshop not only served as an educational experience but also as a platform for young creatives to explore their potential and gain recognition for their work, all while being inspired by the rich cultural heritage housed within the walls of the Hong Kong Palace Museum.
