My name is Derry I'm a Hong Kong based photographer from Bournemouth in the UK. I graduated with a degree in Architecture from the University of Portsmouth in 2012. In 2014, I booked a one-way flight to Asia in the search of turning my life upside down.
In my travels I visited big cities in Asia to get inspired by the architecture, culture and new scenery. Seeking things that I'd never seen back home. When I arrived in Hong Kong I came with a camera and not much else. After living in a youth hostel for 111 days, and after 98 job applications, I eventually got a job in architecture. In my time staying in that hostel, I had very little money and a lot of spare time - so I used it to teach myself photography. I went out almost everyday exploring Hong Kong and learning how to use my camera. The city itself kept me constantly inspired.
I went on to work in architecture for two years here in Hong Kong. In that time my eye for angles and perspectives developed and I always seemed to be drawn to the city around me. I found my day job to be not as creative as I would have hoped - and took to photography at the weekends as my 'creative escape'. As time went on I started to gain some positive response from my work, and after a while I was eventually offered paid photography work. I found trying to balance my full time architecture job and photography to be very difficult. After a while, I realised that what I was doing wasn't sustainable and one had to go. So I quit architecture. I made the decision that my true passion lied with photography and I envisioned my future in photography.
In order to survive in one of the world's most expensive cities with only a camera, I had to teach myself how to shoot almost every field of photography - just so I could keep a roof over my head and put food on my plate. I learnt everything from cityscapes to portraits, food to interiors, drone work to videography. When somebody asked if I could do something - the answer was always 'yes.'
Along my journey I have faced many challenges, hardships and life lessons. Those close to me will know my stories.
I've now been a photographer based in Hong Kong for over 5 years and have been fortunate enough to work on a huge variety of events and projects with some of the biggest brands from all across the world. I have now shot over 1000 events in Hong Kong and overseas. I combine a variety of experiences and skills to put together my photography style, whether its cityscapes, aerial work, fashion, video, products, portraits, landscapes, architecture, corporate, sports or festivals, I’ll bring in a whole range of experiences and a whole bunch of passion when I take on any project.
All in all, I hope my work shows you new perspectives of Hong Kong that maybe you've never seen before. Whether its the city or the events happening within it - I hope my photos inspire you to take get out there and take a second look at the things around you.
